Welcome to the

History Department

The History Department trains students to engage in a sustained investigation of the record of humanity’s existence.  Its faculty represent a wide range of specializations in United States and European history, as well as the history of societies in Africa, East Asia, Canada, Latin America, and the Middle East. From this broad perspective, our students are trained to think critically about how human societies change over time and how people both in the past and in our own day have tried to make sense of that change. History students acquire skills in collecting, synthesizing, and evaluating information from diverse sources, as well as presenting it in support of a coherent interpretation of the past.  The unique combination of content knowledge and skills represented in the discipline of history allows students to develop a sophisticated understanding of human nature and human potential.
Successful completion of the History major will equip students to
o   identify and describe multiple causes and consequences of political, social, economic, and cultural change over time.
o   locate, collect, and evaluate evidence from a variety of primary and secondary sources in print and electronic media.
o   develop and frame historical arguments in clear and correct prose within the context of the discipline’s literature.
o   distinguish the universal from the particular and historically contingent in human experience.
